Sankalpa begins it fundraising campaign in Ballymun!

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Sankalpa got its fundraising campaign off to a successful start at the weekend in Ballymun.  While the last of the votes were being counted in the General Election, some members of the Sankalpa fundraising team organized a collection outside some of Ballymun’s catholic churches.  The people of Ballymun were very supportive and generous at a time when every euros counts.  The team raised 242 euros!  We really appreciate the support of the people from Ballymun.  Our next fundraising event will be our bag pack organized by our fundraising co-ordinator Joeann Byrne.  We are still looking for volunteers, so if your interested please contact us at hello@sankalpa.ie

BETWEEN THE CANALS

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Between The Canals follows three small time criminals from Dublin’s North Inner City as they each aspire to be somebody in a fast changing society: Liam (Dan Hyland) a small time dealer who wants to quit his life of crime to become an electrician and provide for his girlfriend and son; Dots (Peter Coonan), a crazy, irresponsible thug with ambitions to become a big time dealer and Scratchcard (Stephen Jones), a drug user with no ambitions but to stay on social welfare and watch the world go by.

Liam is torn between life in the flats and his responsibility to be a good father to his son. He has to just get through this one day and maybe things will look brighter on the other side. But it’s Saint Patrick’s Day and, in Dublin City, this means trouble everywhere. A heartbreaking and occasionally hilarious story of loyalty, duty and masculinity.

Showing at the IFI from March 18 – 24

Sankalpa supports Citywide Campaign

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Today Sankalpa travelled from Finglas to Dáil Éireann to support the Citywide Drugs Crisis Campaign to make the drugs crisis an election issue.  The event was was well attended by community groups and services who work with drug users.  Drug rehabilitation and recovery reduces crime and saves lives.  Drug prevention programs offer hope of better lives to young people.  According to Dr. Tom O Brien, Manager of Sankalpa, ‘the problem in Finglas is huge.  The drug problem is fueling gang and gun culture.  If governments cut services further, it will send a message to young people in Finglas that there is no hope.  We need a government that will treat all of its citizens equally and that means prioritizing young people from Finglas and Cabra, in the same way we prioritize young people from Blackrock and Foxrock’.

CityWide Drugs Crisis Campaign

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Help make tackling the Drugs Crisis a Political Priority Demand that the new Government commit to:

Full time Minister with responsibility for Drugs

Work with the community in tackling the drugs crisis

Reverse the cuts & fully fund local drugs services

Citywide Drugs Crisis Campaign is a national network of community

activists and community organisations across the country involved in responding to the drugs crisis. CityWide works to promote and support a community development approach to the problems caused by drugs & alcohol – this means involving the people who are most affected by the problem in dealing with the problem – drug users, their families and communities.

Why should the problems caused by drugs and alcohol be a political priority?

Without doubt, problem alcohol & drug use continues to wreak havoc in communities across the country. Individual lives are destroyed, families are torn apart and communities live in fear. But over the past few years we have seen less and less genuine committment from government to tackle the drugs crisis.

It is time to put tackling the drugs crisis back on the political agenda! It is time to make the drugs crisis a priority for politicians!

There is no magic wand to wave to make the drugs crisis go away. The problems caused by drugs (including alcohol) in communities are massive, the responses our communities have developed need to be supported and built upon.

We are demanding that any new government commits the energy and resources necessary to adequately address the drugs crisis. Front line services alone cannot solve the problems caused by drug use. In addition to services, communities must be given the resources and supports to address the underlying causes of the drugs crisis. It requires all of those involved in responding to the problems caused by drug use to work together. This includes those most affected by the problem – communities, drug users and their families.

The new government must work with those communities devastated by the drugs crisis to build stronger community supports to tackle the crisis. The incoming government must appointment a full time Minister with sole responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy. Local drug projects must have the recent budget cuts reversed. These projects should be fully funded so they can carry out the work they were set up to do.

You have a voice – you have a vote – Use it on February 25th!

The Streets Belong to Everyone

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

It is a difficult and brave thing to admit you have a drug problem and seek help. People who do so should not be made to feel ashamed about receiving treatment.

The Dublin City Business Association is calling for 6 drug treatment centres to be moved from the city centre to industrial estates on the edges of the city. They don’t like begging and they don’t like drug-dealers – fair enough you might say. The people who would be affected, however, are not drug-dealers and beggars, but people who are seeking support to recover from drug misuse. Some of them sell drugs, some of them beg. Some of them look after their families and some of them have full-time jobs. Pushing people out of the city centre pushes them even further out on the margins of society.

Ever notice how Finglas, Tallaght and Ballymun have large numbers of people with drug problems? And how Rathgar, Merrion Square and Killiney have relatively few? Marginalisation – leaving people out of society – is a huge factor in drug abuse. Bad planning and ignoring people’s needs have contributed massively to the drug problems we have in Dublin today. Should the people who are actively seeking help for their problem drug use be pushed even further out of our society? Here at Sankalpa, we say no.

The streets belong to everyone.
